Tribute to Bertus du Toit

16 November 2021 1249
On the 6th of October, we lost a remarkable person – Bertus du Toit. With his integrity, great faith, and sincere interest in those around him, he made a lasting impact on our lives, and not ours only, but also on those who had the privilege to cross his path.

Born on the 12th of September 1976 in Burgersdorp in the Eastern Cape, Bertus completed his schooling in 1994 at Hoërskool Burgersdorp. After that, he left for university and completed his B Compt degree at the University of the Free State in 1998 and his LLB degree (Cum Laude) in 2001. In his final year, he was also awarded the Moritz Bobbert Award for exceptional academic achievement.

Bertus begun his articles at Symington & De Kock in Bloemfontein in 2000 and completed it at Oosthuizen Marais & Pretorius. He became a director at Oosthuizen Marais & Pretorius in 2005.
Then, on the 28th of April 2006, Bertus married Cerica Badenhorst in Riebeek Kasteel, and they were later blessed with two beautiful daughters, Lienke and Marí. According to them, he was the best attorney in the world and could not put a foot wrong. Bertus’s family was his life.

He was crazy about running and was no stranger to Comrades Marathons – always sporting his iconic pink cap. Nature was his second major passion, and through many camping and farm vacations, he instilled the same love of nature in his daughters.

During July of 2021, Bertus contracted Covid-19, and although he initially seemed to recover completely, he was admitted to the Life Bayview Hospital on the 17th of September with Covid-like symptoms. Sadly, his condition gradually worsened, and he eventually passed away on the 6th of October.

The loss of someone so dear has a way of crippling one’s emotions. Bertus, we will always think of you with many positive memories. Rest in peace.
